Are You Retaining Water? What To Do About Edema…

Water retention, edema, bloating.  Uncomfortable health challenges that much too many people suffer with.  But what exactly constitutes water retention?  When one has too much fluid that has accumulated in body cavities and tissues, we must understand this is the body’s cry for help from a problem of imbalances and not enough water.  If we do not feed the body enough water, it tries to compensate by retaining fluid causing these levels to go out of balance.

What are some other health issues related to water retention/edema? Liver problems, kidney problems, circulation, blood pressure, pre-menstrual issues, and pregnancy problems.  All these are associated.

How do you know if your symptoms are caused from retaining water?  If you have and feel swollen ankles, feet and hands, and your belly feels as if it is bulging (also caused from wearing tight clothing) then you could be retaining water. If you see a significant shift in the way your clothing fits one day, then very tight and fitted the next, head feels heavy and achy, then your bloating is probably hormone induced also related to menopausal changes or PMS (most definitely if suffering from estrogen dominance).  Constipation, lack of exercise, allergy symptoms, and even weather and climate changes can have an impact on water retention.

So what are the causes of holding on to so much fluid?  Serious dieting and weight control can cause one to remove foods from the diet that provided the body with natural water.  Diet imbalances are direct causes if they are ones that include red meat, too much salty food, MSG, not enough B complex vitamins, potassium, and most definitely water retention will occur is  you have a diet with not enough protein.  You could also be suffering with dehydration.  Pharmaceutical diuretics, birth control pills, alcohol, and steroidal drugs all cause dehydration.

If you are suffering with chronic edema, consider circulatory problems (such as spider veins and varicose veins), kidney, bladder and liver challenges.  Natural herbal therapies are known to balance metabolism and body chemistry to correct the challenge rather than just helping the body to release fluids.

Endometriosis: It’s Painful And Attacks Other Organs

Some women, during their monthly period (menstruation),  bleed severely heavy from the vagina, and sometimes from the rectum.  Most times this is caused by Endometriosis. 

And what is Endometriosis exactly? It is an inflammation, many times a severe inflammation, caused by endometrial tissue that is not shed properly during menstruation.  This tissue escapes the uterus and spreads and attacks other organs in the body such as:  lymph nodes, fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder, kidneys, rectum,  and lungs.  Excessive pain develops when, with time,  the tissue thickens and breaks down to bleeding. Research shows 40-55%  of infertility in American women is due to Endometriosis.  And, scar tissue builds up,  increasing the risk of uterine and even breast fibroids.

Studies also show a link between Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome following an endometriosis diagnosis. Western conventional medicine focuses on prescribing chemical hormone medications with side effects that include:  acne,  unwanted facial and body hair growth, and hot flashes.

Causes of Endometriosis? Yeast infections (read my article on Yeast Infections & More…),  like candida, which create small perforations on the uterine wall, are a common cause of endometriosis.   A diet high in caffeine, fat, low essential fatty acids (EFA), low magnesium levels, is also very much a contributor to this painful female problem. Everyone knows Kidney health is not to be ignored. And everyone says that kidney challenges are painful and serious. Even kidney stones are known to be so painful it has been described by those suffering from them that the pain feels worse than giving birth and worse than a heart attack!

Another sign that the kidneys are in a weakened state is, yes Ladies and Gentlemen, premature aging!  In another article I’ve written on this blog, ‘Longevity, Youth & Health’, I wrote the following in reference to kidney health:

So what are people doing that causes kidney disease and/or kidney stones?

First, kidney function becomes impaired, especially in elderly people, who chronically use NSAIDs drugs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), pain relievers such as Aleve, Motrin, and Advil. The high levels of creatinine in the body that these drugs cause are the reason for the impaired kidney function. This explains why an article in USA Today says that over 350,000 people in US are on kidney dialysis. Kidney dialysis is a treatment used to filter the impurities from the blood that the kidneys and bladder can no longer handle. And USA has THE HIGHEST dialysis death rate IN THE WORLD.

Kidney stones are something that humans have been dealing with since the beginning of humanity, according to scientific studies. Would you believe that in 1901, kidney and bladder stones were found in the pelvis of a 7,000 year old egyptian mummy 4800 B.C.? Here are the stones scientists found:

With that said, know that kidney disease and kidney stones are absolutely diet-related. A diet consisting of high fat, fried foods, dairy products, red meat, carbonated drinks, sugar and/or drug overload, aspirin, overuse of prescription drugs, salt and chemical diuretics. All of these are a sure way of developing kidney disease.

Diabetes is usually involved. Deficiencies in the body of B-vitamins, magnesium, and essential fatty acids, are also found in those with kidney diseases. High levels of aluminum, heavy metal poisoning from cadmium (from smoking cigarettes) and lead, are usually found on kidney disease tests. Allergies and low thyroid, hypothyroidism, also play a role in kidney disease. Adrenal stress and an overuse of antacids contributes to kidney stones.

And what exactly are kidney stones? These form when minerals that normally float freely in fluid eliminated by the kidneys combine into crystals. If the body has too little fluid and inorganic material overloads the body, kidney stones will form. When a stone blocks the urinary tract, it then results in debilitating and excruciating pain.

Preventing kidney stones depends on balancing and strengthening the kidneys with the right foods and herbs (herbs, of course, are also considered foods for the body).

Dehydration is a key factor in kidney stone formation.  So DRINK WATER! At least 6-8oz. glasses daily or half of your body weight in ounces! And drink water during the day!  It is not recommended to drink water right before bed.  It is also not recommended to sleep with water in the bedroom. This energy, according to Chinese medicine, weighs on the body during sleep and can cause unrestful sleep and nightmares.

At first, the body may not show any symptoms of kidney stones except for a dull ache in the lower back.  Yet, when the stone or stones become large enough to block the urinary tract, as I said before, the pain radiates through the body and becomes excruciating, debilitating, with constant urgency to urinate and extremely painful urination.  Other signs that the body specifically needs a kidney stone cleanse are:

  • a distended abdomen
  • women who have anemia or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • vitamin K deficiency

When an infection has set in, there is nausea, vomiting, fever and chills.

Vaginal Dryness & Vaginal Atrophy – You are not alone.

Think of it:  A healthy woman.  If she is still having her menstruation, she should feel vibrant, have a naturally high libido (sexual desire) and be hormonally balanced.  If she is in menopause, this is the time in her life where she wants to be sexually spontaneous with her partner.   She no longer has fear of an unwanted pregnancy.  And then suddenly, intercourse itself becomes painful because of  vaginal dryness, irritation, and itching due to low estrogen levels.

The female problem mentioned here is known as Vulvar and Vaginal Atrophy (atrophic vaginitis). According to NCBI (National Center For Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library Of Medicine): There are an estimated 64 million postmenopausal women in the United States (US), and as many as 32 million women may suffer from VVA symptoms including dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse), vaginal dryness, and vaginal irritation.

This challenging female discomfort is characterized by a thinning and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to a decline in estrogen. Vaginal atrophy occurs most often after menopause, but it can also develop during breast-feeding or at any other time a woman’s body’s estrogen production declines. Many women suffer in silence. An estimated 55% of women do not discuss their symptoms and feel embarrassed to talk about this very common problem, even, at times, with their very own doctor.

This condition of vaginal dryness/vaginal atrophy if left untreated can lead to:

  • incontinence (poor bladder control and a constant urge to urinate)
  • vaginal burning
  • recurrent UTIs (urinary tract infections)
  • inflammation of the vaginal walls and a shrinking of the muscles of the vaginal walls due to low estrogen levels (very low or almost no estradiol) that in turn cause low estriol levels (important for the vaginal lining to be able to lubricate naturally)
  • glandular imbalances
  • low DHEA levels
  • bleeding, usually light, after intercourse
  • Pain and irritation are associated with this syndrome as well
  • tightening and/or shortening of the vaginal canal

Low sexual activity worsens the symptoms, and of course, the discomfort of intercourse makes women want to avoid intimacy altogether – and the problem continues to worsen. Low estrogen levels are one of the main causes of this unfortunate female problem.  

How does a woman know if her estrogen levels are low? Symptoms include:

  • brain fog
  • high cholesterol levels (high ‘bad’ cholesterol levels)
  • vaginal pain
  • low sexual desire
  • insomnia
  • poor or no vaginal lubrication
  • emotional oversensitivity (weepiness)
  • sugar imbalances
  • hot flashes
  • night sweats

Lubrication is another concern.  In menopause, the three muscosities that become the driest are the mouth, skin, and vagina.  Dry mouth and constant thirst, the feeling of needing to moisturize the skin of the body daily or more, and the search for the right lubricant to enjoy sexual intercourse,  are some of the issues a woman who is NOT balanced hormonally will suffer.  Unfortunately, chemical lubricants combined with vaginal atrophy may cause bleeding. Lack of, or no sexual activity doesn’t help. Women must remember, ‘if you don’t use it, you lose it’. 

Vaginal muscles must be used and exercised for vaginal and reproductive system health. Along with stimulating the vaginal walls, women should regularly do Kegel exercises, and if a woman has no sexual partner, she should consider manual stimuli or utilizing a sexual toy to maintain vaginal health.  Yes, I said it.  And I am direct and blunt when it comes to health.  This is self-preservation, self-love, self-healing, Ladies, and should be looked at, and thought of, as ‘taking care of yourself to prevent health challenges’

Also, a decline in sexual activity can bring upon a slew of emotional problems when women find it hard to explain to their partner what they are going through.  The fear of being judged ‘not fit’ any longer to have sex with is
something my own patients/clients have admitted to me in confidence. So, we now know physically what to do.  Hormonally, though, what is a woman to do? Are there natural ways to correct vaginal dryness, vaginal atrophy and the prior symptoms? Yes.

Arthritis.  It sure is painful.  And most times, family and friends can’t bear to see their loved ones suffer.  It’s painful to see a loved one unable to do for themselves like they used to.  And when regular daily tasks become increasingly impossible for them to carry out, sadness and depression tend to take over them…

Many don’t know Arthritis not only affects the joints and bones, but also the brain, immune system, eyes, skin, blood vessels and kidneys (and in Chinese medicine we learn it also tends to stem from the kidneys).  The drugs used in conventional medicine have not taken care of this unfortunately very common disease very well.  Let’s consider Vioxx, the COX 2 inhibiting drug that was removed from the market because it was causing blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks in which many resulted in deaths.  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for relieving pain, but also send approximately close to 80,000 people to the hospital and kill close to 8,000 people a year.

And did you know The Journal of American Medical Association states that HISPANICS are THE MOST AFFECTED BY ARTHRITIS, more than any other race?
