Are You Retaining Water? What To Do About Edema…

Water retention, edema, bloating.  Uncomfortable health challenges that much too many people suffer with.  But what exactly constitutes water retention?  When one has too much fluid that has accumulated in body cavities and tissues, we must understand this is the body’s cry for help from a problem of imbalances and not enough water.  If we do not feed the body enough water, it tries to compensate by retaining fluid causing these levels to go out of balance.

What are some other health issues related to water retention/edema? Liver problems, kidney problems, circulation, blood pressure, pre-menstrual issues, and pregnancy problems.  All these are associated.

How do you know if your symptoms are caused from retaining water?  If you have and feel swollen ankles, feet and hands, and your belly feels as if it is bulging (also caused from wearing tight clothing) then you could be retaining water. If you see a significant shift in the way your clothing fits one day, then very tight and fitted the next, head feels heavy and achy, then your bloating is probably hormone induced also related to menopausal changes or PMS (most definitely if suffering from estrogen dominance).  Constipation, lack of exercise, allergy symptoms, and even weather and climate changes can have an impact on water retention.

So what are the causes of holding on to so much fluid?  Serious dieting and weight control can cause one to remove foods from the diet that provided the body with natural water.  Diet imbalances are direct causes if they are ones that include red meat, too much salty food, MSG, not enough B complex vitamins, potassium, and most definitely water retention will occur is  you have a diet with not enough protein.  You could also be suffering with dehydration.  Pharmaceutical diuretics, birth control pills, alcohol, and steroidal drugs all cause dehydration.

If you are suffering with chronic edema, consider circulatory problems (such as spider veins and varicose veins), kidney, bladder and liver challenges.  Natural herbal therapies are known to balance metabolism and body chemistry to correct the challenge rather than just helping the body to release fluids.

If your water retention stems from Kidney/Bladder challenges then consider there is an emotion root cause.  Kidney issues also stem from harboring specific negative emotions. The two main emotions that affect the Kidneys are:

A diet that is mainly vegetarian, low in starch and high in plant based-protein is best to prevent water retention. Dark green vegetables and fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruits are foods that alkaline the body and help as well.

Eliminate the following: fried foods, salty and sugary foods, caffeine foods, and carbonated beverages which impede the kidney from filtering waste. Avoid dairy foods, starches, fats and heavy grains since these cause clogging and mucous.

Yes, it’s true. Over 43% of women in the US have some type of sexual dysfunction according to a report in The Journal of the American Medical Association. Let’s discuss in detail Poor or No Orgasm, Low Libido (Low Sexual Desire), and Frigidity.

The problem of low sexual desire is not something we are just seeing happen in today’s day and age. Women (and Men) at all times in history have felt the need for help in the sexual area. This part of our lives is at the most basic, elemental center of our being.

Poor or No Orgasm in a woman can be due to various things. Yet, research indicates the top 3 reasons for poor or no orgasm in women are:

1. a weakened circulatory system

2. emotional disconnect with her sexual partner (since a woman’s sexual response is very much dependent on physical and emotional stimuli)

3. poor self-body image

When it comes to circulation, for a woman to be more sensitive, improved blood supply to vaginal walls and the clitoris is necessary. If there is healthy circulation to the groin area, you can be sure to also be more sensitive on the famous G-Spot.

The Grafenberg spot (G-spot) is an area of heightened pleasure for any woman when it is stimulated properly. According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine, Volume 9, Issue 5, May 2012, the G-spot has a distinguishable anatomic structure. Yes, Ladies (and Gentlemen), it does!  It appears as a well-delineated sac with walls that resemble fibro-connective tissues and resemble erectile tissues. Erectile tissues! Think of it! If the G-spot can actually become ‘erect’  it makes perfect sense as to why blood flow is crucial to achieving an orgasm/multiple orgasms! Regarding poor self-body image, you must remember Ladies, that you must learn to love yourself, first and foremost. Think of your body positively, know and understand what pleases you sexually, and share with your partner your sexual fantasies and ideas, no matter what they may be. Walk around your home in the nude as often as you can. Look at yourself in the mirror. If you do not put yourself on a pedestal and love and treat yourself as the Queen that you are, who can know how they should treat you?

Libido-lowering elements such as: the over-use of drugs (antibiotics
and many prescription drugs have side effects of impairing sex
drive and even cause vaginal dryness), a stressed, high-pressured, rushed lifestyle,  hormone-injected foods, foods with hormone-disrupting chemicals, and high fat nutrient-poor diets laced with sugar and refined flours, all lead to a lack of time for love-making, low energy and low libido.

 

 

 

 

Frigidity is painful intercourse usually due to vaginal dryness, and/or fear rooted in sexual trauma (possibly rape, molestation, or any other
sexual episode in the woman’s life that brings her discomfort when trying to be intimate). If vaginal dryness is the concern I recommend improving lubrication internally and improving skin tone ( I will give the solution for this at the end of this article).

Fear to have sex because of some physical or emotional trauma may also bring on depression. If a woman is taking anti-depressants or other medications, her libido is almost guaranteed to suffer. If she feels she cannot be pleased or please her partner, it may bring about despair and an even more depressed state, and it becomes a vicious cycle. Depression-related libido problems are resolved when we increase serotonin and also naturally improve libido with herbal aphrodisiacs (sexual enhancing herbs).

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches us that all the above symptoms in women are due to weakness, weak energy, fear/fright, and ‘damp-heat’ within the body.  What are the main organs that need focus and support according to TCM?  The Kidneys.

The kidneys are in charge of reproduction, growth (because they also dominate
the structural system such as bones, joints, etc.) and maintenance of the metabolic balance of water. Located in the lumbar region of the body, it is said the loins (hips, groin, lower abdomen, reproductive organs) are the residence of the kidneys, so, when the kidneys are ill/diseased, symptoms may occur across the loins. Fear is the emotion related to the Kidneys. And you’ve learned enough with my past information that emotions affect us physically. In  other words, if there is Low Libido, Frigidity, and
Poor Orgasm, focus on the Kidneys!

TCM further teaches us that when the Kidneys are not nourished properly, a woman may be suffering infertility also. All should be treated by toning, strengthening, and reinforcing the kidneys’ energy. In this way we also eliminate deep rooted Fear. In my office I’ve seen time and again the concerned look in many female patients’ faces, and worry in their eyes because they just don’t ‘feel’ right.  This discomfort is formidably lifted from when a woman balances and strengthens her kidneys.

The skin is the cover that reflects what is happening inside the body. Healthy, young, glowing skin means a healthy, young, glowing interior. I’m sure you know the skin is the largest organ of the body. And if you feed your body ‘junk’, then junky skin you will have, my friend. It is the organ of elimination and detoxification; the backup for the other elimination organs. If your colon is congested, overloaded, and toxic because you aren’t eliminating minimum 2 to 3 times daily, then the skin also becomes dull, overloaded and riddled with toxins.

The liver is the filter of the blood and it is also known that everything that has to do with the skin is also related to the blood, so your liver must be in optimum performance if you want optimally healthy skin. If the liver can’t efficiently filter impurities coming from the digestive tract, your skin suffers, trying to compensate by releasing toxins through the pores. If you are suffering with constipation, you will specifically experience acne and rashes.

Your skin is also the largest organ of absorption and indigestion; both of nutrients and toxins. If you have a healthy diet, your skin will prove it. Highly processed food, junk foods, fried foods, foods bombarded with hormones and chemicals and nutritional deficiencies are the first to show on the skin. Toxins are excreted through the oil glands. This leads to, not only acne, as I mentioned prior, but also boils.

Even your emotions are relevant in your skin! It is a mirror of your emotional and hormone balance, too. Stress causes the skin to react negatively and hormonal imbalances are perceived as poor skin texture, spots and/of blemishes.

 

Having shared all this, what are the 8 signs that indicate you need a skin cleanse? They are the following:

  • Do you have sallow skin? Poor skin coloring may indicate waste buildup from liver malfunction or drug residues. Do you have age spots? Brown mottled spots on the hands, neck or face may reflect waste accumulation in the liver.
  • Do you have adult acne, or uneven skin texture?  Waste build- up from environmental pollutants, poor, liver exhaustion and stress allow increased free radical formation which attack skin cell membranes.
  • Do you have wrinkles, or sagging skin contours? Free radical activity also affects skin collagen and elastic proteins, resulting in wrinkling and dry skin.
  • Do you have puffy or swollen eyes, dark circles under eyes, or crusty, mucous forming in your eyes? If your breath is also bad, it’s a pretty solid sign your body has an overload of fluid wastes.
  • Do you have a skin disorder?  Psoriasis, dermatitis, seborrhea, and even dandruff, all indicate its time for a skin cleanse.
  • Do you have skin sores or rashes that aren’t healing? or hard bumps on the skin?  Your body may be overloaded with waste that your not eliminating.
  • Do you have usually oily skin? or scaly, itchy skin? or chronically chapped and red skin? A skin cleanse will probably help.
  • Do you have poor circulation? Cold hands and feet, swollen ankles, poor digestion and chronic constipation are also signs that your body lacks tissue oxygen uptake. Poor skin tone is a sign of an antioxidant deficiency.

Put simply, think of your face as a map and blemishes as X’s on that landscape. Olive Oil (preferably Extra Virgin): Add this to your diet for EFA’s, the essential fatty acids needed for soft, fresh, healthy, young-looking skin. Olive Oil is best used raw, unheated, and drizzled on top of your food right before eating it after serving yourself on a plate. Also, it is recommended to rub Olive Oil on skin to lock in moisture. (Excellent during the fall and winter months.)

Green Tea: Wonderful for inflammatory, itchy skin conditions.

Celery, Tomatoes, Pears, and Lemon Juice: Chinese Medicine recommends preparing a juice blend of these. Prepare mixture and drink once per day for facial dark brown spots, itchiness, and acne.

*Extra Tip* Always wash face with cold water. This way you do not strip skin of its natural oils and prevent premature aging. As for skin on the body, do not take scalding hot showers. Instead, take showers in which the water is as cool as you can stand it.

In answer to these questions, and those specific to aromatherapy, I will detail here what aromatherapy is and how we can enhance our sexual experiences in a holistic, healing fashion with essential oils.

Aromatic oils have been used since ancient times in massages and therapeutic baths. These excellent remedies used by herbalists are magnificent for depression and relieving stress. And of course, we have found they have a very intriguing effect on the sexual experience. Essential oils act in plants the way hormones do in us humans. Sex enhancing oils are to be used in the following ways:

  • Massage 3-5 drops of essential oil on the bottoms of the feet, the lower back above the buttocks, and the front and side of the hips.  If utilizing a carrier oil, add 10-12 drops of essential oil to 1/2 oz. of carrier oil.

11 Main Causes of Varicose Veins And How To Treat Them Naturally

Varicose veins are ugly.  And those that are dealing with varicose veins feel pain at times.  Most people think that this is just a simple circulatory weakness but they are the result of leaky valves. Symptoms include leg and ankle swelling, cramping, heaviness, and unexplained severe fatigue. When there is a vein valve that does not function well because of a defect in the vein wall that dilates the vein, a varicose vein develops. Blood pressure rises and causes bulging when a valve does not function.

Now, most of the women on my mother’s side of the family have varicose veins. And no, this does not mean I am doomed to suffer from them also. I chose to look into my family’s genetic history whilst I began my studies 24 years ago in Alternative Medicine, Holistic Medicine, and Naturopathy.  I immediately learned how to prevent these genetic ailments in myself and others, and also learned how to treat those genetic tendencies in those suffering with varicose veins to help the body carry out its innate ability of healing itself. Remember you have a choice to either focus on your family’s tendency for certain health challenges and take them on yourself, or, you can choose to Prevent disease.

With that said, let’s move on to other types of varicose veins…

Vasculitis is an inflammation of the veins. Weak vein walls and advanced age that brings on loss of muscle and tissue tone, increases the fragility of veins to cause vasculitis. Women are affected with this condition 4 times as much as men. Spider veins are thinner, purple and have the appearance of red lines. These may appear on thighs, of course, lower legs below the knees, face and even on the upper arms.

How do you know if you have varicose veins? Check for painful legs and leg veins, swollen, distended legs, stiff, heavy, tight feelings in the legs, and legs that ‘fall asleep’ producing a feeling of tingling, pins and needles, and numbness.

What are the 11 main causes of varicose veins?

  1. A diet high in red meat
  2. Low fiber intake
  3. A diet low in true nutrients (weak vascular walls as a result of weak connective tissue are due to lack of vitamins A, C, E, and a lack of essential fatty acids (EFAs) also
  4. Dairy foods
  5. Fried foods
  6. Constipation
  7. Overweight/Obesity
  8. Sitting for long periods of time (impedes proper vein circulation)
  9. Standing for long periods of time (impedes proper vein circulation)
  10. Heavy lifting (exercise is necessary, just be cautious of overdoing it with heavy weights training)
  11. Bad/poor posture

Invasive therapies do not resolve the root cause of varicose veins. We must work internally and help the body heal by feeding it properly with plants, herbal nutrients, and fresh foods.

Tip: Eat A More Vegetarian Diet. I can’t stress this enough. Varicose veins are rarely seen in countries and cultures where people eat high in fiber.

  • Eat more dark green vegetables. They promote circulation.
  • Spend 24 hours every month on liquids, healthy of course, to help decongest the circulatory system and give the digestive system a break.
  • Yes I’ll say again, eat more vegetables.
  • Eat more red and blue fruits. Berries such as cherries and blueberries should be purchased frozen organic so as not to increase candida yeast (a contributor to fatigue).
  • Eat more whole grains, brown rice, and fish which are natural sources of EFAs (essential fatty acids).  Consuming fried fish is not recommended.

What exercises and activities are best for those that suffer with varicose veins?  Swimming is great for the legs. Dance more like the amazing Tina Turner and walk around the house on your tip toes!

  • fevers, chills, trembling
  • high blood pressure
  • a dull constant ache in the lower back may indicate kidney stones
  • ear problems, hearing loss, chronic ear infections (in adults and children)

Another sign that the kidneys are in a weakened state is, yes Ladies and Gentlemen, premature aging!  In another article I’ve written on this blog, ‘Longevity, Youth & Health’, I wrote the following in reference to kidney health:

History points to many Chinese scholars and physicians who achieved longevity by eating kidney traditional Chinese herbs and tonics. In My Teaching to Posterity, a literary classic by a Chinese scholar named Yan Zhi-Tui in the 6th century, he said, “I have been in the habit of eating kidney tonics throughout my life, which is why I could still read fine print when 70 years old with no gray hair on my head.”.  Even two Chinese emperors were famous for their longevity due to their firm beliefs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and to their regular practice of taking kidney tonics. ; Emperor Jia-Jing and Emperor Qian-Long.}

So if you’re dealing with too many wrinkles for your age, if your hair is graying too quickly, if your appearance is that of one in which you ‘look’ older than you truly are, then stop spending large sums of money on wrinkle creams and hair dyes. The kidneys should be your focus for a long, youthful, healthy life.  In these organs lies the true fountain of youth

So what are people doing that causes kidney disease and/or kidney stones?

First, kidney function becomes impaired, especially in elderly people, who chronically use NSAIDs drugs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), pain relievers such as Aleve, Motrin, and Advil. The high levels of creatinine in the body that these drugs cause are the reason for the impaired kidney function. This explains why an article in USA Today says that over 350,000 people in US are on kidney dialysis. Kidney dialysis is a treatment used to filter the impurities from the blood that the kidneys and bladder can no longer handle. And USA has THE HIGHEST dialysis death rate IN THE WORLD.

Kidney stones are something that humans have been dealing with since the beginning of humanity, according to scientific studies. Would you believe that in 1901, kidney and bladder stones were found in the pelvis of a 7,000 year old egyptian mummy 4800 B.C.? Here are the stones scientists found:

With that said, know that kidney disease and kidney stones are absolutely diet-related. A diet consisting of high fat, fried foods, dairy products, red meat, carbonated drinks, sugar and/or drug overload, aspirin, overuse of prescription drugs, salt and chemical diuretics. All of these are a sure way of developing kidney disease.

Diabetes is usually involved. Deficiencies in the body of B-vitamins, magnesium, and essential fatty acids, are also found in those with kidney diseases. High levels of aluminum, heavy metal poisoning from cadmium (from smoking cigarettes) and lead, are usually found on kidney disease tests. Allergies and low thyroid, hypothyroidism, also play a role in kidney disease. Adrenal stress and an overuse of antacids contributes to kidney stones.

And what exactly are kidney stones? These form when minerals that normally float freely in fluid eliminated by the kidneys combine into crystals. If the body has too little fluid and inorganic material overloads the body, kidney stones will form. When a stone blocks the urinary tract, it then results in debilitating and excruciating pain.

Preventing kidney stones depends on balancing and strengthening the kidneys with the right foods and herbs (herbs, of course, are also considered foods for the body).

Dehydration is a key factor in kidney stone formation.  So DRINK WATER! At least 6-8oz. glasses daily or half of your body weight in ounces! And drink water during the day!  It is not recommended to drink water right before bed.  It is also not recommended to sleep with water in the bedroom. This energy, according to Chinese medicine, weighs on the body during sleep and can cause unrestful sleep and nightmares.

A diet that is mainly vegetarian, low in starch and protein is best to prevent kidney stones. Dark green vegetables and fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruits are foods that alkaline the body and help prevent stone formation.

Eliminate the following: fried foods, salty and sugary foods, caffeine foods, and carbonated beverages which impede the kidney from filtering waste. Avoid dairy foods, starches, fats and heavy grains since these cause clogging and mucous. Studies also show that TUMS, the antacid, increases the risk for stone formation.

At first, the body may not show any symptoms of kidney stones except for a dull ache in the lower back.  Yet, when the stone or stones become large enough to block the urinary tract, as I said before, the pain radiates through the body and becomes excruciating, debilitating, with constant urgency to urinate and extremely painful urination.  Other signs that the body specifically needs a kidney stone cleanse are:

  • a distended abdomen
  • women who have anemia or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • vitamin K deficiency

When an infection has set in, there is nausea, vomiting, fever and chills.

Sex, Women & Looking Younger

Yes, it’s true. Over 43% of women in the US have some type of sexual dysfunction according to a report in The Journal of the American Medical Association. In this article I’m specifically talking about Poor or No Orgasm,
Low Libido (Low Sexual Desire), Frigidity. The problem of low sexual desire is not something we are just seeing happen in today’s day and age. Women (and Men) at all times in history have felt the need for help in the sexual area. This part of our lives is at the most basic, elemental center of our being.

Poor or No Orgasm in a woman can be due to various things. Yet, research indicates the top 3 reasons for poor or no orgasm in women are:

1. a weakened circulatory system

2. emotional disconnect with her sexual partner (since a woman’s sexual response is very much physical and emotional stimuli)

3. poor self-body image.

When it comes to circulation, for a woman to be more sensitive improved blood supply to vaginal walls and the clitoris is necessary. If there is healthy circulation to the groin area, you can be sure to also be more sensitive on the famous G-Spot. The Grafenberg spot (G-spot) is an area of heightened pleasure for any woman when it is stimulated properly. According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine, Volume 9, Issue 5, May 2012, the G-spot has a distinguishable anatomic structure. Yes, Ladies (and Gentlemen), it does! It appears as a well-delineated sac with walls that resembled fibro-connective tissues and resembled erectile tissues. Erectile tissues! Think of it! If the G-spot can actually become ‘erect’ then it makes perfect sense as to why blood flow is crucial to achieving an orgasm/multiple orgasms! journal above.) Regarding poor self-body image, you must remember Ladies, that you must learn to love yourself first and foremost. Think of your body
positively, know and understand what pleases you sexually, and share with your partner all your ideas, no matter what they may be, with your partner. Walk around your home in the nude as often as you can. Look at yourself in the mirror. If you do not put yourself on a pedestal and love and treat yourself as the Queen that you are, who can know how they should treat you?

Libido-lowering elements such as: the over-use of drugs (antibiotics
and many prescription drugs have side effects of impairing sex
drive), a stressed, high-pressured, rushed lifestyle,  hormone-injected foods, foods with hormone-disrupting chemicals, and high fat nutrient-poor diets laced with sugar and refined flours, all lead to a lack of time for love-making, low energy and low libido.

Frigidity is painful intercourse usually due to vaginal dryness, and/or fear rooted in sexual trauma (possibly rape, molestation, or any other
sexual episode in the woman’s life that brings her discomfort when trying to be intimate). If vaginal dryness is the concern I recommend improving lubrication internally and improving skin tone.
Fear to have sex because of some physical or emotional trauma may also bring on depression. If a woman is taking anti-depressants or other medications, her libido is almost guaranteed to suffer. If she feels she cannot be pleased or please her partner, it may bring about despair and an even more depressed state, and it becomes a vicious cycle. Depression-related libido problems are resolved when we increase serotonin and also naturally improve libido with herbal aphrodisiacs (sexual enhancing herbs). Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches us that all the above symptoms in women are due to weakness, weak energy, fear/fright, damp-heat within the body, and the main organs of focus are the Kidneys.

The kidneys are in charge of reproduction, growth (because they also dominate
the structural system such as bones, joints, etc.) and maintenance
of the metabolic balance of water. Located in the lumbar region of
the body, it is said the loins (hips, groin, lower abdomen, reproductive organs) are the residence of the kidneys, so, when the kidneys are ill/diseased, symptoms may occur across the loins. Fear is the emotion related to the Kidneys. And you’ve learned enough with my past information that emotions affect us physically. In  other words, if there is Low Libido, Frigidity, and
Poor Orgasm, focus on the Kidneys!
 TCM further teaches us that when the Kidneys are not nourished properly, a woman may be suffering infertility also. All should be treated by toning, strengthening, and reinforcing the kidneys’ energy. In this way we also eliminate deep rooted Fear. In my office I’ve seen time and again the concerned look in many female patients’ faces, and worry in their eyes because they just don’t ‘feel’ right.
