Psoriasis. Are You Inflamed?

Psoriasis. A skin disorder that affects close to 7 million people in the US. Immune system imbalances are involved, yet it is not contagious. Psoriasis is characterized by an abnormal growth of skin cells. While psoriatic skin cells take an abnormal 3-6 days to mature, normal skin cells mature in a month. It may seem like a simple skin disorder, but did you know over 450 people die each year from certain complications due to severe psoriasis? Symptoms include:

  • Arthritic joint pain and skin
    joint inflammation
  • a significant ‘dip’ or pitting of the nails
  • inflammation, scaling and redness of skin usually on hands, feet, scalp, knees, behind knees, inside and outside of elbows
  • intense skin peeling, sometimes

Some severe cases have shown large amounts of skin loss which then make the person susceptible to infections that can become serious.

Excellent results are seen with a holistic approach including the following natural therapies that help correct psoriasis by focusing on strengthening the immune system, strengthening the nervous system to cope with stresses better, reducing stress, and reducing discomfort with anti-inflammatories:

Healthy skin is attainable as so many have shown when using a natural holistic approach. And this is highly encouraged and stated in a report in The Lancet. The immune system needs time for strengthening. Use the above supplements for 3-6 months to ultimately help the body heal from this disorder. Healthy skin to All! Be Well!

Do You Have Signs Of Lupus?

Lupus. Most people with Lupus, surprisingly, are either Hispanic or Black women. It is estimated this viral disease affects 2 million Americans, and more than 80% of those 2 million are Black and Hispanic Women.

Lupus is an inflammatory, multi-system autoimmune disease. It is characterized buy a disoriented immune system developing antibodies that attack its own connective tissue. Arthritic like symptoms affect joints and connective tissue; lymph nodes and kidneys become inflamed; and in the worst cases brain and central nervous system degenerate, and so does the heart.

Allopathic medicine / conventional medicine has proved it can not successfully help those suffering from lupus. We know this especially from a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that revealed that 10% of cases are diagnosed from a result of drug reactions. In other words, pharmaceutical drugs are known to cause 10% of Lupus cases.

What are the signs of lupus? Symptoms include red skin patches that appear anywhere on the body, chronic nail fungus specifically red at the cuticle base, inflammation around the mouth, severe fatigue and depression, inflammation around the cheeks and nose, sensitivity to light, low-grade chronic fevers, dry eyes, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, amnesia, psychosis, migraines, and even anemia.

Causes of lupus? These include everything from taking too many Hydrazine derivative prescription drugs, to emotional stress, viral infection, candida albicans yeast infection, latent diabetes, and chronic fatigue syndrome related to candida yeast infection.

Yin Chinese herbs have demonstrated themselves to prove extremely successful in the treatment of lupus. Below is the photo of one of my patients, Josefina Baez, whom after herbal treatment has now been diagnosed negative for Lupus. It was a humbling honor to serve her and be a part of her health journey.

Use the following Chinese herbal program for minimum 90 days to overcome inflammation, joint and body aches and pains, achieve more energy, alleviate depression, and the chain of related symptoms associated with Lupus:

8 Results To Expect From A Cleansing & Detoxification Program

Detoxification and Cleansing.  Doesn’t ‘cleansing’ negativity and bad health remnants sound like the right thing to do physically and spiritually?  And don’t we all want to Prevent Disease?  How can we think of preventing disease if we don’t consider using tools such as Detoxification?

The cleansing or purging of the intestines–detoxification–dates back to 2500 B.C. with Egyptian bowel specialists. The Greeks also used it, as did the American Indians. Detoxification has been known and used for ages. But this is the time in history it is the most needed and the most important. Foods have become denatured, devoid of enzymes, overly sugared, and just plain poisoned. Food and water have become more toxic. And our digestive systems are overloaded. Detoxification is absolutely imperative.

Your elders most likely practiced detoxification with you!  You may have memories of your grandmother or mother giving you a “clean-out” or “wash-out” every year right before the beginning of the school year…   Or you may remember being ill and watching your grandmother, or some family member, walk into the backyard,  pull some roots out of the ground, some leaves off a plant, wash them, and make you a potent tea that had you feeling light on your feet, energized, and brand new again in no time…

Detoxification has been called the ‘missing link to disease prevention’.  Unfortunately, with the amount of toxins in our foods and the environment, our bodies have difficulty performing such an automatic function alone. The process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through vital eliminatory organs such as the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin,  and colon,  is something they were once capable of when they were not completely overloaded.  If these toxic substances are not eliminated, our intelligent bodies push toxins to one side, and surround it in mucous and fat in order for us not to suffer an imbalance or immune reaction.

Our emotions are also affected by a toxic, congested body.  The emotion of ‘Not Letting Go’ is associated with the health of the colon/large intestine.  Negativity is more difficult to ‘let go’ of’ in life if a person is not having minimum 2-3 bowel movements per day. The colon when impacted in this way brings a person to suffer constipation.  So consider a detoxification  a step towards cleansing emotionally also…

For those who have considered Detoxification to manage their weight, or to lose weight successfully, you should know you’re perfectly right in doing so!  Why? For the following reasons:  The body surrounds toxins with MUCOUS and FAT.   If the body is storing foreign substances in fatty deposits, this is a crucial reason for Detoxification.   The more Fat the body is storing, the more Toxic the body is.  And maintaining a low fat diet and low body fat in general is a form of disease prevention also.   People can be carrying between 5 and 16 pounds of mucous and fat that carry toxic waste!

A cleansing and detoxification program should do the following:

  • 1- to clean the digestive tract of accumulated waste and fermented bacteria
  • 2- purify the liver, blood, and kidneys
  • 3- clear excess congestion and mucous from the body
  • 4- correct craving dependencies of nicotine, alcohol, drugs, sugar and caffeine
  • 5- increase mental clarity
  • 6- balance hormones
  • 7- strengthen the immune system
  • 8- and change bad eating habits in a person so their stomach reduces to normal size

Eat This Fruit To Burn Fat And More… ~

Good Morning and Buenos Dias!
Continuing with healthy eating inspiri, motivi, ans stimuli, let’s talk Metabolism… Want to turn your body into a Fat-Burning machine? Eat more of another fruit I Love, Grapefruit!

According to Medical Daily, ‘Grapefruit provides us with benefits other than vitamin C — from protecting us against certain cancers to boosting our metabolism — keeping us in good health.’

Continued, as per Medical Daily, are the 6 Unexpected Health Benefits Of Grapefruit:

1. Strengthens Immune System

It is well known any fruit rich in vitamin C will strengthen and support our immune system. Vitamin C works with other micronutrients that provide good and regular nourishment for the body. Micronutrient deficiencies of vitamins A, B6, C, and E have been found to alter immune responses in animals and are thought to have a similar effect on the human immune response.

Maintaining good levels of vitamin C in the body can reduce the severity of cold symptoms, acting as a natural antihistamine. This makes it helpful in controlling allergies, since it reduces histamine levels. “Grapefruit is abundant in vitamin C which help supports the immune system,” Blake said. “Half of a grapefruit provides about 78 percent of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin C.”

2. Boosts Metabolism

Grapefruit is a popular diet staple among those looking to lose weight. A high metabolism can continue to burn fat in the body even when it is resting. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found people who ate half a grapefruit before each meal, without making any other dietary changes, lost an average of 3 and a half pounds over 12 weeks.

The copious amount of enzymes, high-water content, and less sodium helps burn fat easily. Blake said: “While grapefruit does not have any magical fat-burning properties, it is low in calories and is a good source of fiber, which helps keep us full for longer by taking longer to digest. … Grapefruit also has a high water content which can help you feel full and stay hydrated.”

3. Reduces Kidney Stones Risk

Naringenin — known for its bitter taste of grapefruit — has been found to successfully prevent the formation of kidney cysts. According to a report by AlphaGalileo.org, the naturally occurring compound regulates the PKD2 protein that is responsible for the condition. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects not only help prevent the formation of cysts, but also reduce swelling in the kidneys that is caused by fluid retention. Drinking up to a liter of grapefruit juice daily will help reap the greatest benefits in effectively blocking the formation of kidney cysts.

4. Fights Gum Disease

Simply eating two grapefruits a day can prevent and even reverse damage caused by gum disease. A 2005 study published in the British Dental Journal found the daily consumption of grapefruit can reduce gum bleeding for those who suffer from gum disease. The participants in the study also showed an increase in their vitamin C levels, which aids in the repair of gums. Vitamin C, according to Blake, is essential for healthy gums, which helps keep our teeth firmly in place.

5. Protects Against Cancer

The antioxidant vitamin C has been linked to decrease the risk of certain cancers. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found grapefruits help repair damaged DNA in human prostate cancer cells. Naringenin stimulates DNA repair in these cancer cells and protects the body from developing cancer.

“Diets high in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant found in many fruits and vegetables such as grapefruit, had been linked to a reduced risk of cancers of the stomach, colon, bladder, breast, and esophagus,” said Blake. She cautions these results are specific to vitamin C rich foods, rather than supplements.

6. Reduces Stress

You don’t necessarily have to ingest grapefruit to reap its benefits. The smell of citrus fruit can make a difference on curbing our stress and anxiety levels, and depression. A 1995 study published in the Japanese Journal of Psychopharmacology found citrus fragrance restored stress-induced immunosuppression, and induced calm behavior in mice.

Chanté Floreani, an apothecary Artisan and founder of Root Down Botanicals, believes natural fragrance and the science of aromatherapy can inspire well-being of mind, body, and spirit through the “therapeutic power of plants.” Floreani’s three blends, which includes grapefruit to “energize and cheer,” is used in the morning to get the day started with energy and mental alertness. “Each is formulated to respond to the emotional shifts we experience throughout our day by harnessing the therapeutic qualities of pure essential oils,” Floreani told Medical Daily in an email.

Well, my Friends? I believe it speaks for itself… Bring more Grapefruits into the diet for better health. 🙂

‘Pumpkin’ Season Is Here And Here Are The Benefits!

My weakness… I’ve been caught orange-handed! Yes. This is me today with a miniature pumpkin cupcake in my hand… And I’m enjoying every miniature morsel!… I’m in the office today, and had to satisfy that sweet tooth craving this time with one of these tiny delicacies placed on the Business Lounge counter of my office waiting area nestled so strategically between other ‘naughty’ sweets. These are the types of lures you’ll find this time of year, every holiday season, every where you turn. A slight weakness? Yes. I’m human. Yes, I’ve said many a time that I have a weakness for these kind of vegetable and fruit desserts: from a small slice of sweet potato pie, to a small slice of carrot cake, to a slice of warm apple pie (minus the common scoop of ice cream), to, you’ve guessed it, a miniature pumpkin cupcake.~

However. And it is a capital H, However, as a human who loves her body and wishes to maintain optimum health so I may fulfill my mission to continuously help others, we must exercise discipline. And understand I enjoy the occasional delicacy as this on weekends. And today is Friday (smile). Apart from the sugar, we, of course, want to keep the girlish figure in check (smile) Are you with me, Ladies? And to burn more calories, I will, more often than not, sip on a hot cup of green tea with the weekend rarity. Of course, exercise, being a Vegetarian (I mean, a Pescatarian, since I occasionally eat fish), drinking plenty of water, meditation, using natural herbal therapies, refraining from alcohol, and so on, all are pluses that allow my body to metabolize sugars and burn calories very efficiently.

So in exercising control, please don’t condemn me too much for enjoying my miniature pumpkin cupcake (smiling again). If you’re thinking twice about ‘taking the pumpkin out of the cupcake’, here are the health benefits of pumpkins according to the Huff Post :
Weight loss
Sharper vision
Better immunity
Younger-looking skin (we will eat anything healthy that will help us look younger!)
Lower cancer risk
It may help treat diabetes

Great stuff, yes? So once in a blue moon while, Enjoy! ~Dr. Julissa

9 Natural Immune Boosters

Repost from MyNSP Blog.

A vital immune system can mean the difference between a pleasant winter and a miserable one. Do your part to help your body stay strong with help from these gifts from Mother Nature:

The root and leaves of this purple coneflower have been used for centuries   by American Indians and Europeans to boost immunity. Echinacea triggers the   body’s white blood cells to attack unwanted invaders. According to research, it  can significantly increase the body’s white blood cell count. Specifically, this herb  increases the body’s count of T-cells, interferon, interleukin and immunoglobulin.

Believe it or not, your gut is a key part of your immune system. And eating plenty  of friendly bacteria (probiotics) helps strengthen your immunity!

A recent study published in Postgraduate Medicine found that women who   took a daily probiotic had higher levels of T-cells. T-cells are special white blood   cells that support the immune system. So say “Yum!” to yogurt or get crazy for  sauerkraut. But check the labels. Some yogurts offer very minimal amounts of  friendly flora. Consider taking a quality probiotic supplement.

Many of us hit the orange juice or eat extra oranges or grapefruits during the winter months.  Citrus and other red fruits and veggies (red peppers, strawberries and even leafy greens)  contain vitamin C, which helps protect and support the immune system. It also strengthens the  cardiovascular system, supports eye health and more.

Long-cherished for its support of the bones, vitamin D3 (the sunlight vitamin) is opening eyes for its immune-system benefits. Researchers are studying this nutrient to find out how it helps support immunity. It appears to help regulate the function of lymphocytes (an important type of white blood cells), the production of cytokines (another key white blood cell) and the activity of macrophages (protein  messengers vital to immune function).

This flavorful and aromatic member of the onion family stimulates the production of important  white blood cells. Garlic also helps quench free radicals in the bloodstream. It even supports  heart health.

The western U.S. and Canada are home to the Sambucus nigra or elderberry. Its properties have  been studied by many scientists, and for good reason! It contains principals that stimulate the  body to make cytokines, a type of protein molecule that enhances the immune system’s response  to attacks. This dark-colored berry also contains powerful antioxidants, including anthocyanins.

Most people think of mushrooms as a flavor enhancer or use them to bulk up a   dish. But some mushrooms offer much more than that. Researchers have found  that reishi and cordyceps mushrooms contain chemicals that offer a host of immune benefits,  including boosting the immune system and offering lung support. And, guys, it may  help with prostate health as well!

This essential trace mineral supports the body’s immunity and aids   with nerve function. Zinc seems to work the best when taken at   the first sign of concern.

Hold the pimientos. We’re talking about olive leaf here, not cocktail garnishes or pizza toppings. The leaves of this Mediterranean staple offer a powerhouse of protection against unwanted invaders. Olive leaf contains a bitter compound called oleuropein that also provides fabulous support to the circulatory system. And it battles free radical damage.

  1. Minimize stress.
  2. Stay active.
  3. Eat a healthful diet. Steer clear   of sugary and high-fat foods,   which can slow and/or weaken   immune response.
  4. Socialize. People with friends  have stronger immune systems  than those who feel alone. Of course, try not to socialize with people who are sick 😉

Have Blisters? Had Chicken Pox? Think Shingles.

CF6PF6 Shingles in an adult male, age 50

CF6PF6 Shingles in an adult male, age 50

Newly updated July 11, 2016.

Did you know over 1 million Americans over the age of 50 are diagnosed  with Shingles every year? Unfortunately, many are in the dark about exactly what shingles is and where it stems from. Shingles are the eruption of an acute nervous system infection caused by the HERPES ZOSTER virus. This is the same that causes chicken pox.
Symptoms present themselves as the following:

  • Infectious herpes type blisters appear on the body torso.
  • Flu-like symptoms are felt such as fever, headaches and upset stomach.
  • Scarring, numbness, and skin discoloration often result as well.
  • You may be prone to shingles if you had chicken pox as a child.

One out of ten people who had chicken pox as children develop shingles later in their life time. The number one cause of shingles is a reaction to certain medications, usually multiple medications, especially antibiotics like penicillin.

HC1 (hydrochloric acid) depletion is common. HCl is required for the body to ionize minerals in the food so that the body can absorb them. HIVES are the same type of itchy blisters, but are caused by an allergic reaction to a chemical, like chlorinated drinking water, or foods such as dairy products, shellfish, wheat, MSG, or food colorings and additives. Stress, and an overloaded, exhausted liver, and lowered immunity also trigger outbreaks.

DO YOU HAVE SHINGLES SIGNS? Signs include: fever, chills, and a desperate, anxious feeling that overcomes the person right before very inflamed, painful, swollen, red skin blisters develop. Pain radiates along one or several nerves preceding outbreaks; attacks last from 2 days to about 2-3 weeks, leaving the person with very irritated nerves, fever, chills, fatigue, and weakness after blisters are gone.

***BE AWARE*** Shingles can be passed on to a person that has not had chickenpox.

Are You A Host To Parasites?

Newly updated Jan.18, 2016.

So, we learn within Naturopathic, Holistic, and Traditional Chinese Medicine that there is no Cancer without a presence of parasites… Let me repeat that statement: ‘There is no Cancer without a presence of parasites.’ Even Candida Yeast infections are caused by a parasite. And Candida is an underlying cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In other words, I’ve begun this article with all these hard facts because I want it to be made very clear that Parasites are very much a large cause of a large range of ailments and diseases from slight and mild ones to severe, life-threatening ones.

In the article, ‘Parasites and Cancer’, a Dr. Raphael D’Angelo did some research stating:

‘In a recent month I tested 54 stool specimens. Roundworm eggs were present in 25 people; half were infested with yeast and most had one or more protozoans. What is remarkable is that all the cancer patients had parasites and of those without cancer only one was parasite free!’

It’s been found that humans can be hosts to OVER 130 types of parasites. A staggering close to 90% of people in the US have had parasites at some point in their lives. And over 52 million children in the US are infected. As many as close to 25% of parents become infected by parasites by catching it from their own children.

So what are the signs of parasite infestation?

  • Do you or your child grind your teeth at night when you sleep?
  • Do you or your child have an unrestful sleep pattern that includes moving around the bed constantly? Awaking the next morning off your pillow in a completely different area of the bed than that which you fell asleep in?

Here are some more signs of parasite infection specific to these parasites:

  • Roundworms: intestinal cramping and/or fevers and chills
  • Pin worms: unexplained itching of skin, sometimes with an internal crawling-like feeling, vaginal itch and irritation that may also be present in the perianal and perineal areas. These worms tend to become active at night when the body is at rest. They are very common in children and appear around the anus as thready, white worms. Watch out for children scratching their bums, or backsides, complaining of itching.
  • Hookworms: known as the 2nd most common parasitic infection in the US. Symptoms include abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, lethargy, diarrhea, and anemia (usually unexplained).
  • Protozoa (amoebae): cause joint pain, most times diagnosed as arthritis, pain, dysentery, dehydration, and symptoms similar to leukemia.
  • Blood fluke (Schistosomiasis): these parasites cause severe liver problems, abdominal pain, lesions on the lungs, diarrhea, vomiting, and hemorrhages under the skin.
  • Tapeworms: can block the intestinal tract. Even 1 single worm can cause severe intestinal obstruction. This worm lays eggs sometimes found in the liver, and these have been mistaken for and even treated as if they were Cancer.
  • Giardia: pay close attention to the combination of these symptoms which show up after an incubation period of 1-2 weeks: nausea, diarrhea, cramps, fatigue, abdominal pain and weight loss.

And the numbers of those infected with parasites is shocking.

Trichomoniasis: the most common parasitic infection in the U.S., accounting for an estimated 7.4 million cases per year.

Toxoplasmosis: According to the latest article published by the CDC (Center For Disease Control), there are an estimated 1.5 million new Toxoplasma infections and 400–4,000 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis in the U.S. each year; 1.26 million persons in this country have ocular involvement due to toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is the third leading cause of death due to foodborne illnesses (375+ deaths). Toxoplasmosis has been found to also cause miscarriages.

So, are you at risk of acquiring parasites?

The CDC also proved in studies of 25 years that 1 in every 5-6 people selected randomly had 1 or more parasites. And guess what?… MOST KISSED AND SLEPT WITH PETS IN THE BED! Most ALSO ate pork, smoked fish, and raw fish (as in sushi), sausages and prosciutto. Sorry to break the news to you… Now, regarding pork. Please know the parasites that infest pork meat, of any kind or style, Do Not Die from cooking. There is NO degree of heat humans can use to cook their food that will kill the parasites that are in pork meat. Next, always, and I mean, always use toilet seat covers when using public bathrooms.

Since parasites have become resistant to antibiotics and many drugs, it is imperative the immune system be supported properly to help our defenses against parasite infestation. What you want is to release, eliminate, and cleanse parasites from the body, remove accumulated fecal matter, mucous and phlegm, and use anti-infectives to create an unfavorable environment for parasites. Parasites leave eggs behind, and so it is imperative to eliminate these also. I recommend the following for minimum 30-45 days:

Additional Tips: Drink only purified water. Bottled water preferably. Wash your vegetables and the greens for your salads thoroughly and eat a green salad daily. Avoid foods that ‘feed’ parasites and make them stronger as junk food, sugar, and dairy foods.
This you should already know, but always wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before each meal and after using the bathroom.

Natural therapies have proven time and again to be the effective treatments for these critters. Share this with others. Prevent Cancer. Prevent disease. And let’s do all we can to get back to Health!
